Central Hudson Test: Understanding Meter Readings

The debate surrounding Central Hudson's ban on estimated meter readings took a turn when the company appealed to the Supreme Court after the lower courts upheld the restriction. In its appeal, Central Hudson argued that the ban violates its First Amendment rights by restricting free speech and imposing unwarranted government regulation.

If you want to receive reminders for your scheduled meter reading date, toggle the 'Meter Read Alerts' option on in your account settings. The court has developed a four-part test to determine restrictions on commercial speech.

To find out when your next meter reading is due, check the bill summary section of your billing statement or log into your My Account page and refer to the 'Account Details' section at the bottom.

However, if Central Hudson is conducting an actual reading for your account, you will not be able to submit your own reading. The electric distribution system consists of 7,149 miles of overhead lines and 1,678 miles of underground lines, as well as customer service lines and meters.

You can submit your meter reading two calendar days prior to the scheduled estimated meter reading date, but no later than noon on that day. Central Hudson's transmission system consists of 568 pole miles of line.
